How long have you been spinning the decks for?
I started buying records in the early 90's - a lot of drum n bass stuff. I took a break for about 8 years and collected CD's, but over the last 2 years, I have been hitting the vinyl hard. Thank the Lord for CDJ's though, it means that I can incorporate my CD's into my set.
What originally hooked you into the DJing scene?
The sheer versatility of it all. I love the fact that I can play all types of music to people. I love the energy that a good DJ sends out, be it in clubs or on radio. I also think it is an extremly important role in the development of artists and music as a whole. Dj'ing is about responsibility as well as fun. Being responsible for playing quality music to move a quality crowd. But all in all, I love the feeling of spinning a record I love and seeing the crowd go wild....and when they come and ask "what is this, who made this, where can I get this" that is the cherry on top!
Your musical influences?
Too many to mention. My Dad was a reggae artist, so that stuff is in my blood. Musical influences to name a few are...Fred Locks, Michael Campbell, The Dazz Band, Airto Deodata, Lonnie Liston Smith, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Rose Royce, Weldon Irvine, Dennis Brown, Freddie Hubbard, MF Doom, 4hero, Nice n Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Genesis, Lionel Richie, Patrice, Rushen, Earth, Wind and Fire, Deniece Williams. Johnny Hammond, Madlib, J Dilla, Al Green, Loose Ends, Gangstarr, Azymuth, O.C, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Qunicey Jones, Kaidi Tatham, Bugz in the Attic, Kev Brown, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Eddie Kendricks, Teena Marie, Andrew Gold, Average White Band, The Roots, Omar, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, The Fugees, Charles Stepney, Creed Taylor, Idris Muhammed, Nina Simone, Harry Love, Lewis Parker, Klashnekoff, Jack One, Vitamin D, Jehst, Pete Rock, Hi-tek, Nas...please don'e make me go on....
What type of music do you specialise in?
Jazz, house, soul, broken beat, hiphop...basically anything with soul and groove
Most expensive vinyl that you have paid for? - how much was it?
Ohhhh.....to be honest, I haven't reached that stage yet where I'm shelling out for records, but when the time comes, I'll rise to the challenge.
What is your most treasured record and why?
Time Capsule by Weldon Irvine...listen to it and you will know why.
What clubnights have you played at?
Funkilism @ Loop Bar, Future @ Notting Hill Arts
Club music scene - what do you think about it?
I think the music scene has is thriving..it always has and always has been. At the moment, some artists and even labels are having a tendency to be very formulative and that worries me....but to be honest, there is a world of music out there, you just have to be willing to open your mind and start searching.
What has been your coolest DJ night and why?
Future @ Notting Hill Arts Club. This was cool because I got to play some really choice music to a fantastic crowd. Plus, I was an organiser of the event, so I got to listen to other DJ sets which is alwyas a bonus.
Have you got any DJing horror stories?
Once I had to play at a bar and there was virtually no-one there. It was just me and the bar staff....pretty grim
Where would be your ultimate DJing location - home and abroad?
It has to be home. I would love to play in a club in London and just blow their mind for 90 mins with a mixture of what I see as classic material. Have them reciting verses from EPMD records one minute, then chanting along with Fela Kuti the next, followed by some Five Corners Qunitet dancefloor jazz....just watching them soak it all in and really feel the music.
What clubs / clubnights can we find you at?
I have a few residencies in the pipeline, so I will keep you posted.
What are your all time Top 5 tunes?
Wowsers, this is a hard one......it would have to be - and this is in no order at all:
1) "In The Thick Of It" - Brenda Russell
2) "Gotta Have Your Love" - Clyde Alexander
3) "Get Dis Money" - Slum Village
4) "Chameleon" - Herbie Hancock
5) "True Rastaman" - Fred Locks
any shout outs?
To all those who support music and artists...to the person who helped make my first audition tape...and to the nice people at Disque in Chapel Market for taking my money every week.
