"Check out the unique DJ Cherrie Flava spinning a diverse spectrum of
music ranging from hiphop, reggae, soul, funk, disco, latin,
brazilian, jazz, african... the lot baby.. and lovin' it"
Where were you born?
London baby!
What was your favourite hobby as a kid?
Selling stuff, I was kinda a little bit of a wheeler kid always trying to sell my friends smash hits posters, pot pouri (coloured pencil sharpenings sprayed with deodorants) lol.. as a gotta older it was all about collecting music which quickly spiralled into an obsession. No better high than some good music.
How did you get into DJing/presenting?
With the Djing it was kinda a natural progression.. I had to try and make back all the money i spent and i love the enjoyment of folks going crazy to something i'm playing.. although my first few gigs were restaurants. Looking a people eating food for four hours can make you go crazy! i got on innacity thanks to Pharoah Roche[Wednesdays 8pm - 10pm] who asked me on his show as a guest, I saw how good he was and we had a wicked time and i decided to give it a go and haven't looked back.
Who/what are your biggest influence(s)?
Its gotta be J Dilla really, thats when hiphop got interesting for me. Allthough early hiphop.. well ya cant beat it ..but in the mid nineties nothing was really going on hiphop wise.. it was getting boring and Dilla introduced me to the detriot scene... great hiphop! This is why i started digging for all those breaks and old school tunes. Also James Brown! pure genius.. i play bass but i wouldn't have wanted to be the JBs with James running that business, your game had to tight,he was stricted with his band but it wouldn't have been funk and even hiphop without him. Can I add one more?! (Yeah) ... my sister was a big influence. There's nothing like an older sister with the knowledge to set you on your way.
Name a key tune that you love or inspired you ?
Soundman & Don Lloydie With Elisabeth Troy - Greater Love. Its not my favourite tune of all time but its kinda down beat but still a heavy early drum and bass tune and Elisabeth smashes up the vocal. It just one of those tracks i feel in my bones and lifts me up!
What is your favourite lyric?
Watch, as I combine all the juice from the mind
Heel up, wheel up, bring it back, come rewind
Powerful impact BOOM! from the cannon
Not braggin, try to read my mind just imagine
Vo-cab-u-lary's necessary
When diggin into my library
Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!
Its from Scenario by Tribe Called Quest its the first part of Busta Rhymes verse. most people remember up this part... makes ya wanna get wild.
What interests or hobbies do you have outside music?
Er cycling...sad but true.. but my buns are tight from that, i recommend it, ha ha
Which three rules do you live your life by?
What?! ...er...
1. music
2. love
3. dont take yourself too seriously
You're on your way home from a rave and you're starving, there's a kebab shop or a bagel shop, which one do you go to? Bagels are you joking! i want real food baby, besides there ain't no bagels shop open at 2 in the morning.
If you weren't a DJ/presenter, what would you be?
An artist, love painting!
